Auto camp iCamp

Surrounded by wooded hills and in possession of an owner known for his warm welcome and cold beer on your arrival, Autocamp iCamp is a quiet little bolthole five minutes’ drive from the restaurants, bars and shops of historic Visoko and Sarajevo. Round and about the neatly kept campsite is an outdoor seating area for eating and socialising (it’s covered so makes an excellent hideaway from any rainy weather), and a well-equipped communal kitchen with a small fridge (always with free beer available) and a cooker. Tea, coffee, extra mugs and a few cooking utensils are provided as well. Facilities-wise, there are two modern bathrooms (separate for women and men) with reliable hot water in the showers so you can freshen up after a day walking in the bizarrely triangular Bosnian Pyramids range of hills. There’s also an outdoor shower for cooling down on hot sunny days. The campsite provides a host of practical services as well, namely unlimited electricity on the pitches, washmachine ( one time per day its free) and drinking, optical internet ,water and disposal for grey/black water. Where to first? Heritage aficionados should have a nose around the neolithic mounds at Okolište and the gleaming, contemporary White Mosque, both in Visoko (five minutes’ drive). Next, head off into the hills to explore the Old Town of Visoki (10 minutes), once the Bosnian capital, with its relics of a 14th-century castle and seemingly endless views over modern-day Visoko and the surrounding plains. There’s more food for thought for historians at the Ravne Tunnels (10 minutes), which may (or may not) be a labyrinth of subterranean passages dating back 30,000 years. Guided meditation and archaeological tours are available daily – booking is required in advance. You can combine your venture underground with a walk up the famed Bosnian Pyramids (10 minutes), the remarkable range of triangular hills that top the tunnels. Controversy surrounds these peaks too – are they ancient and manmade, or naturally formed? Whatever the answers are, this unique landscape provides challenging hiking and spectacular views.
