Camp Douglas Smith

The camping area is spread out, regulated, and free; no reservation is needed. I was there in the fall and there were plenty of empty spots, and they're quite far apart, so you don't see them. I imagine it's much busier in the summer. It's a four-minute drive from the start of a beautiful trail that leads to the dunes of Lake Michigan. The trailhead is only open during the summer months. There's a store that sells ice, firewood, and some gas station-style food; I think there are even showers.
